Disney’s Live Action Mulan: Teaser Trailer

Disney’s Live Action Mulan: Teaser Trailer

One part of parenthood I’ve been imagining in my head for as long as I remember is sharing key parts of my childhood with the children in my home. For me, those moments were pool days in the summer, donuts and chocolate milk with my dad, shenanigans with my cousins, and (of course) Disney movies. Usually on repeat. So it goes without saying that I’m feeling antsy and thrilled and basically overwhelmed with emotions about the latest trend of recreating Disney classics for the next generation.

First, there is the obvious- technology has advanced more than a bit since the classics were made. Sure the storytelling and art of animation are undeniably there, but younger audiences tend to be more enthralled by what’s most realistic/modern/relevant to the entertainment they’re accustomed to. These new classics are going to allow me to share the stories that shaped my childhood with my very own children, but in a format that’s equally as exciting for them.

More importantly, times have changed. And the efforts in storytelling should certainly be able to adapt in order to shape the next generation into the kind of grown-ups who will continue to be inspired to change the world.
Take the most recent teaser trailer for the live-action Mulan movie. No songs, no humorous mini-dragon of sorts, no jokes about a cricket ruining a culturally and historically significant practice. Instead, the trailer specifically focuses on the cultural ideas of a “good wife” and how limiting Mulan to such social boundaries would be to hide the bold warrior she is capable of being.

No “dishonor on your cow” one-liners (though, admittedly a pure classic from the animated classic). Instead, the trailer shows us that this film will honor the history and rich culture it represents. The trailer provides that the overall story remains on track, whereas the silliness previously applied to deeply rooted local practices has been delicately woven out. And having the best of both worlds is what will allow this film to soar when it opens on March 20, 2020.
