Harry Potter Themed Nursery -“You Are So Loved”

Our Harry Potter Themed Nursery

You Are So Loved:

The moment we started the process to become a certified Resource Family, we started to get the ball rolling on the nursery. We knew the child(ren) we would be placed with would be anywhere from newborn to 3 years old. So we didn’t have much to work with in regards to what age-specific things we needed. All we knew was that they would not be any older than 3 years old based on the preference we put down. THAT’S IT. No clue on gender, exact age, or if we would be getting placed with one child or a sibling group.

So we were working with as you can tell, not much to go off of at all.  But we worked with it.

First we got a few small items most rooms need like shelves, a dresser, lamps; the basics really. Once we put in writing the age we would be open to it allowed us to go a step further which was very exciting. I’m talking a convertible crib, changing table, rocking chair, children’s books, and bath toys, to name a few things. We received a generous amount of gender neutral clothes from friends. Anything else will likely have to be purchased once we are placed so we know the sizing of what we need. Car seats, strollers, anything age-specific really, will all have to wait until literally the day of our placement. (With that being said we did get a hand-me-down car seat for a newborn that is in great condition, so I guess we have a slight leg-up there!)

Why We Chose a Harry Potter Themed Nursery:

We wanted to go with a gender neutral look for the nursery, not too this or not too that, just so we wouldn’t have to change much when the child(ren) arrived. I honestly do not know how it happened but I agreed to have Kalie decorate the room with a Harry Potter theme. (On second thought, scratch that- she agreed to paint the accent wall in our bedroom pink and I owed her one.)

A little background on how we landed on a Harry Potter nursery

My wife loves Harry Potter. I’m a fan and I enjoyed the movies and books, but she is on a whole other level. We, well she mainly, watches the movies almost every weekend, she keeps re-reading the books, and has a HP tattoo. Like I said… whole other level. When we were deciding on a theme she threw it out there and I agreed because I love her, and because I got a pink master bedroom.

After really thinking about it, and hearing her go on her Harry Potter rants about how it’s the best series and greatest story ever written “with so many complexities”, I actually really loved the idea.

Who Is Harry Potter?:

For those of you who don’t know who Harry Potter is or aren’t familiar with the story  (honestly if you don’t you probably live under a rock and need to get up to speed), here is a brief summary on the series:

Harry Potter is an orphan boy who lives with his deranged aunt, uncle, and cousin. He is mistreated, deprived of food, and forced to live in a tiny closet under the stairs while his cousin has two full rooms for himself. Magically (pun intended) on his 11th birthday Harry gets a visit from Hagrid and finds out he is a wizard. He attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he finally finds where he belongs. His peers and mentors become his own family that loves him, accepts him, and allows him to be the best wizard/person he can be. He learns that blood doesn’t always mean you’re family: love and compassion do.

It is truly an incredible series and I recommend reading the books and/or watching the movies.

(Editor’s note: this summary has been reviewed for accuracy by my wife and received approval. She did however correct the very last sentence and would like to clarify that the recommendation is mostly to read the books. You should watch the movies too, but the books are SO MUCH BETTER.)

Why It’s Perfect:

After really thinking about it, this Harry Potter themed nursery is perfect for the little human(s) that will be placed with our family. We may not be their blood relative, we may not have given birth to them, but we will love them and help them grow. the same way Harry’s friends and mentors helped him. Most likely this child will have gone through trauma, mistreatment and/or neglect- but we will be what Hogwarts was for Harry. A safe space, a place where they can be free, a place where they can learn, a place where they are surrounded by love and encouragement, and where they can grow to be their own hero. A place where the sign hanging on their bedroom wall reminds them everyday, “You are so loved”.

“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.”- Professor Dumbledore
