Dash and Lily Honest Review

Last night K and I started watching the new Series on Netflix, Dash and Lily. We watched the trailer and I have to admit I thought it was so cheesy. BUT, I LOVE cheesy romantics where things are predictable but also makes you gasp like you didn’t see any of it coming. To give you a basic idea of what Dash and Lily is about here is the synopsis, but don’t worry I will give you my spoiler free thoughts as well!

Synopsis:

A whirlwind Holiday romance builds as cynical Dash and optimistic Lily trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations all across New York City, finding they have more in common with each other than they would have expected.

My Thoughts on Dash and Lily

I love a good Christmas movie, I love a good romantic Christmas movie set in New York City to be exact. It just adds the right amount of flare and magic to it. I personally have never been to New York but watching Dash and Lily made me want to book a plane ticket and embrace the City’s Winter wonderland. But instead I’ll just enjoy it on screen and stay in the warm California sun. But I digress, Dash and Lily is based on the novel written by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. The series is produced my Nick Jonas so you already know it’s going to be good.

We are only 5 episodes in but I am enjoying every minute of it. It has enough cheesy romantics that happen way too fast but makes your heart feel happy and you find yourself rooting for Dash, A misunderstood teen who is having a rough time spending Christmas alone.

Then you have sweet Lily who is just as misunderstood but cheery and filled with Christmas spirit. Feeling like an outcast her whole life she finds herself expressing her feelings through homemade clothing and friendship bracelets, you’ll understand when you watch it.

Importance Of Diversity

What I love most is the amount of diversity in the cast. From the main character being Asian and a cast mixed of Transgender, LGBT and BIPOC. It is refreshing to see a cast so openly themselves and not have that be the whole conversation. The talk on being one’s true self and embracing who you are is message we all need right now. I love the way they tie this into the movie. You can really see the progression of the main characters as you go on through the series and you get to really learn about their internal struggles and how they overcome them. There’s a lot of self discovery which helps build the narrative of being who you want to be but also be open to trying new things, even if it means having to step out way of your comfort zone.

Final Thoughts

So far, we love it! We have three more episodes left but I just had to write this review as it was fresh in my mind because it was that good. If you have a teen or pre-teen I highly recommend it. A few things to keep in mind though. There are a couple moments where there is a cuss word or two, scenes with alcohol, a party scene, and moment where Lily “interrupts” her brother and his boyfriend in bed. The scene alludes to the idea of something happening but nothing else is shown. Listen, if that makes you uncomfortable then don’t watch it. The show is full of diversity from LGBTQIA and BIPOC and we love to see it! As a gay woman it was refreshing to see a gay couple normalized and shown Together like it’s no big deal, because it isn’t! It has everything you need in a modern romantic series with just the right amount of predictable without being obvious. So there you have it folks, my spoiler free review of Dash and Lily. Seriously go check it out, and let me know how you like it!
